The Future Vet Kids Camp 2025, held in January at Waverley College in Sydney, captivated young animal enthusiasts aged 9 to 16 with a unique blend of education, engagement, and hands-on experience. Designed by veterinarians and led by Dr Audrey and Dr Alison Shen from the Bondi Vet TV series, this annual camp provides young kids with an introduction to veterinary medicine and animal care.

As an advocate for the veterinary industry, PetSure continued to support the program this year by awarding scholarships to three aspiring young vets—Poppy, Indie-Rose, and Cameron—providing them with an incredible opportunity to attend the camp.

PetSure CEO, Alexandra Thomas said: “At PetSure, we’re committed to pet health education, and we’re thrilled to be part of a program that inspires young animal lovers to join the veterinary industry and pursue their passions.”

Program highlights

The five-day Future Vet Kids Camp 2025 provided an unforgettable journey of fun and learning for PetSure scholars Poppy, Indie-Rose, and Cameron. Immersed in the fascinating world of veterinary care, they experienced hands-on visits to veterinary hospitals, behind-the-scenes tours, and opportunities to observe surgeries and animal rescues.

They delved into pet nutrition, explored exotic animal care, and practiced drawing blood from models. They also marveled at advanced veterinary technologies like ultrasounds in action. Special presentations on dog training, grooming, and animal rehabilitation added even more excitement, sparking a deeper appreciation for the veterinary field.

Scholarship recipients share their thoughts

We asked Cameron, Poppy, and Indie-Rose a few questions about their camp experience, and their enthusiasm was contagious.

When asked how they felt upon hearing they had been awarded the PetSure scholarship, each scholar’s reaction was filled with excitement:

Cameron: “Very excited because that was all that was on my mind.”

Indie-Rose: “When I heard that I got the scholarship, I was really excited, I burst into tears!”

Poppy: “When I heard I got the scholarship, I had to ask if I really got it, or are you just kidding? Then I read that I got it, and I got really excited and happy.”

Their camp highlights reflected their diverse interests. Cameron loved meeting the animals, saying, “Probably the different animals we got to see, like the birds and turtles—they were really interesting!” Indie-Rose was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes experiences: “Going behind-the-scenes at Sydney Zoo was incredible!”

Each scholar also learned valuable new skills. Cameron and Poppy thought drawing blood was a great experience. Cameron shared his excitement about practicing on a model: “Extracting blood was pretty cool! They gave us a fake pet arm, and that’s a new skill I’ve learned here.” Indie-Rose appreciated learning life-saving techniques: “Probably CPR and learning how to do it because if your dog ever gets hurt, you know how to help!”

Big dreams, bright futures

Attendees left the camp inspired, with many sharing how the experience deepened their love for animals and solidified their career aspirations.

Cameron shared, “I have always had a great love and connection with all animals. My dream is to become a vet, in particular an exotic species vet, specialising in reptiles.”

Poppy, passionate about life on the farm, revealed, “I would love to one day be a vet who specialises in larger farm animals. I know I’d get to see how rewarding this career could be and the not-so-glamorous parts of it.”

Indie-Rose, a budding animal protector since pre-school, declared, “I love animals so much that I want to protect all of them, even the most dangerous ones!” These young scholars showcased their dedication and love for animals, proving the future of veterinary care is in great hands.

The camp left them all inspired, with Cameron summing up the experience: “I know that if I want to be a vet in the future, it will require a lot of hard work, but the camp has inspired me.”

Pet insurance can help by covering a portion of the eligible vet bill if the unexpected happens. Because it is difficult to predict the costs of veterinary care, it can help to have measures in place to help prepare for the unexpected.
