Appearance and Personality

The Manx is a medium sized cat, weighing around 3 to 5kg. They come in all cat colours and patterns. They have a round face and their hind legs tend to be longer than their front legs meaning their rear ends are higher than their front end. They may have no tail at all, or a short tail. Their life expectancy is 10 to 12 years.

Manx cats are clever and playful with strong hunting instincts. They make sociable and lively companions at home. They are well suited to apartment living if they are provided with cat trees to climb and jump on as well as plenty of toys. Keep your Manx cat indoors or in a cat friendly enclosure to help keep them safe from roads, other cats and snakes as well as helps to keep wildlife safe from your cat.

Most Manx cats have a short thick coat with minimal grooming required. A cat grooming glove can be used a couple of times a week to help remove loose hair. They may also have long hair, however which requires a little more maintenance.

Common Health Concerns

The five most common reasons for a Manx to visit the vet (excluding routine care visits) according to PetSure data from 2016 to 2020 included Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA), constipation, diabetes, and gastrointestinal upsets. Problems with the bowels and digestion may be related back to their Manx genes. In some individuals the nerves in the spine may be damaged which can cause complications involving the bladder and bowels. Constipation may be caused by megacolon which occurs when the muscles within the rectum don’t function properly, resulting in a build up of stool within the body.

Traumatic accidents including cat fight abscesses and wounds were also noted as the top reason for Manx cats to visit the vet from 2016 to 2020. It may be possible to lower the risk of your cat from having a traumatic accident by keeping them indoors or in a cat safe enclosure.
