Meet Josh

Josh hails from Los Angeles, California!

Q. Hi Josh! Thanks for joining our 2021 PetSure Vet Student Internship Program. Can you start with telling us a little about yourself?

A. I got into veterinary medicine after completing my first degree in linguistics and working for a university. I began volunteering at an animal shelter and loved both the animals and the medical side and have worked my way through the veterinary field from receptionist all the way up to vet school. My family are all human nurses, so I’ve always loved the challenge of medicine, but cute puppies are better patients than people any day!

Q. What are you hoping to gain from your time at PetSure?

A. I would love to gain a better understanding of pet insurance and how to structure my records to help streamline the process for all parties involved. I also have an interest in learning more about the industry outside of a clinical setting and seeing how different parts of the industry contribute to patient care.

Q. What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

A. One thing people are surprised to learn about me is that I used to play competitive dodgeball in Los Angeles before moving to Sydney! I’m usually quite mild mannered but it’s a fun outlet for my hidden competitive side.

Q. Do you have any pets?

A. I have a 6-year-old Rottweiler Cross named Tim Tam.

Q. What quote or saying do you live by?

A. “For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Q. What do you understand pet insurance to be?

A. My understanding of pet insurance is that you pay a premium every month in order to have access to funds in the event that your pet requires medical attention. I know it is much more nuanced than that in regards to how payments are made, what is and is not covered, and what portions of things are covered.

Q. What is your veterinary career goal?

I have interests in both Emergency and Critical Care as well as diagnostic imaging, but I plan on going into general practice. Next year I will be undertaking a rotating internship with an ECC focus but after that I’m not sure where I’ll go next, which is something I love about the veterinary industry, so many options!

Pet insurance can help by covering a portion of the eligible vet bill if the unexpected happens. Because it is difficult to predict the costs of veterinary care, it can help to have measures in place to help prepare for the unexpected.
