Woolies-backed PetCulture

Woolworths’ standalone online pet business, PetCulture, has launched and, already, is attempting to change the way Aussie businesses see pets.

The business is a joint venture between Woolworths and Hollard Group’s PetSure, and is being run independently of Woolworths despite the supermarket group’s 60 per cent ownership.

PetCulture will expand on the burgeoning pet care options available across Woolworths Group.

And the business’ first act is to call on business leaders to grant more flexibility when it comes to workers taking care of their pets. The business launched an online petition calling for ‘peternity policies’, allowing workers to use sick leave to take care of sick animals, peternity leave to take care of new pets, and to allow more pets in workplaces.

“With more pets than people in Australia – 29 million and counting – pets have become integral to our way of life. However, our research reveals that Australian pet parents aren’t getting the support they need from the workplace when it comes to caring for their pets,” said PetCulture chief executive Simon Smith.

“Given that our mission is to support and nurture the relationship between pets and pet parents, we’re proud to be leading the charge for Peternity Policies.”

According to the business, 81 per cent of pet parents support such a shift in policy, while 61 per cent believe their workplaces wouldn’t support such a change.
