When it comes to pet names, Luna has held the title as the most popular pet name for five consecutive years from 2019-2023, according to PetSure’s database of over 700,000 pets. Interestingly, Luna is the number one pet name for both dogs and cats in 2023.
Luna, Coco and Daisy rounded out the top three of popular pet names for 2023.
PetSure Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Jenny Williams said Luna’s number one spot for both dogs and cats was not only because of its Harry Potter association to the character Luna Lovegood, but the fact that numerous celebrity couples (including Chrissy Teigen and John Legend) chose the name for their children.
The trend in the humanisation of pets has also likely influenced the pet names, driving similarity between pet and human names with Australians treating their four-legged friends like members of the family. For instance, names like Scruffy, Spot and Socks are half as popular as they were in the early 2,000s. Over the same period, more human-like names like Luna, Ruby and Charlie have soared in popularity as pet names.
