The sudden drop in the Mercury level may make some of us a little reluctant to head into the great outdoors to keep fit and healthy. But our four-legged friends still need their daily dose of activity. So, here’s 5 fun things you can do with your pet without stepping foot into the cold this winter.

1. Enrichment & Interactive toys

Interactive toys, such as puzzle feeders, snuffle mats and scent games can help keep your pet mentally stimulated and physically active. These toys require your pet to use their problem-solving skills to get to their treat or toy, which can help keep them entertained and active.

2. Tug-of-war

Tug of war is a fun and easy way to get your pet mStair climbingStair climbingoving indoors. All you need is a rope or toy that your pet can pull on. This game can help build your pet’s strength and agility, while also providing a fun bonding activity for you and your pet. Always use toys that are gentle on teeth and gums and never pull the toy up or down roughly as this can cause neck injuries

3. Stair climbing

If you have stairs in your home, consider using them to help burn off some surplus energy. You can toss a toy up the stairs and have your pet chase after it or have your pet walk up and down the stairs with you. Keep a close eye on pets going up and down stairs as they can trip and fall just like we can. Stop straight away if your pet appears to be getting tired. Stairs may not be appropriate for pets with knee, hip, or other orthopaedic conditions.

4. Indoor fetch

If you have a larger indoor space, such as a hallway or living room, you may be able to enjoy a game of indoor fetch. Use a soft, lightweight toy that won’t cause any damage to your home and make sure there’s plenty of space for your pet to run and play. Avoid indoor fetch if you have slippery floors as it could result in an accident.

5. Indoor agility courses

If you’re feeling creative, you can build your very own indoor agility course for your dog (or playground for your cat) using household items, such as pillows, boxes, or blankets. Navigating your obstacle course can help by working on your pet’s balance, coordination and problem-solving skills, and might even be beneficial for you too!

Thankfully, in most parts of Australia, winter is mild enough that we can continue to enjoy the great outdoor lifestyle. However, providing your pet with indoor exercise options, can also help keep them healthy, happy and entertained during those times where the weather is too inclement to venture outside. Always remember to supervise your pet during any indoor exercise activity and most of all, have fun!
