Australia is famous for its hot climate, but there are some regions that experience freezing temperatures, particularly during the winter months. Even in areas that don’t freeze, a sudden drop in temperature can impact unsuspecting pets (and people!). Here are some tips on how to protect your pets from the cold this winter and get the most out of the cooler months.

1. Clothing

If your pet enjoys wearing a cosy jumper or jacket, this can be a great way to keep them warm on chilly winter mornings. Some pets don’t tolerate clothing, so if they don’t like it, don’t force them. Always make sure pets are supervised and cannot become tangled in clothing.

2. Shelter and bedding

Bolster up existing bedding with blankets and be sure to provide a nice soft pet bed for the warmer months. If your pet resides outdoors, make sure you give them somewhere dry and free from drafts where they can retreat from the elements.

3. Stay active

Whilst you may feel a little sluggish over the winter months, remember that remaining active helps both you and your pets stay warm and healthy. Maintaining muscle mass can have a positive impact on managing conditions like arthritis, degenerative diseases like hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease, reduce obesity, help with senior wellness as well as generally increasing fitness and vitality. So, don’t skip the walks and play time during winter.

4. Know the signs of hypothermia

Although many parts of Australia don’t get cold enough for pets to become hypothermic, it’s worth knowing the signs. Shivering, apparent tiredness, pale skin, muscle stiffness and shallow breathing are all signs that something is not right. Check outdoor pets regularly during cold or extreme weather for any signs that they are uncomfortable. If you have any concerns about your pet’s health, be sure to consult with your veterinarian.

5. Paw care

Cold, dry weather can create cracked or sore paws. Check paws daily as part of your regular contact with your pet. Booties or paw balm may help protect paw pads.

By following these tips, you can help your pets stay warm, healthy, and happy during the cooler months. Remember to also check that pets don’t become too warm during Aussie winter, particularly on sunny days and in active pets. Stay warm and enjoy the season with your furry friends!
