Frequently Asked Questions

How can I create a less stressful experience for my cat, when giving medication?

Creating a calm environment: Find a quiet area free from distractions where your cat feels comfortable.
Gentle restraint: Use a towel or blanket to gently secure your cat, ensuring their safety and minimising stress.
Positive reinforcement: Offer treats or praise before and after medication to associate the experience with something positive.
Have someone available:  They will be able to assist you by holding  your cat if your cat needs a little more reassuring.

My cat won’t swallow the liquid medication. Any tips?

Use a syringe: Tilt your cat’s head up slowly (towards the ceiling), and gently wedge the syringe through the gap between their canine and their back molars. Administer the liquid medication slowly and gently, aiming towards the back of the throat. Ensure they have swallowed it before removing the syringe. The presence of the syringe in their mouth stops them from spitting the medication out.

Ask your veterinarian about compounding: Some pharmacies can turn liquid medications into flavoured suspensions or into a tablet that may be more appealing to cats.

How do I know if I’m giving the correct dosage?

Many preventative medications (worming tablets for example) are based on your cat’s weight but if your cat is on the border of doses and you are unsure, you may want to reach out to either VetChat* (where a vet can consult with you over the phone or online) or you can consult with your veterinarian.
Medication prescribed by your vet for an illness condition will have specific instructions for your cat, including the correct dosage based on their weight and any specific storage instructions.

How do I get my cat to swallow the medication. Any tips?

After you have placed the tablet at the back of your cat’s mouth, while maintaining their head tilted towards the ceiling, you can gently blow or tap on their nose  or stroke their neck to encourage swallowing.

Remember, if you have any concerns or difficulties when giving medication to your cat, it’s important to consult your veterinarian for guidance. They can provide you with personalised advice and address any specific concerns you may have.
